Nepal has no single grading system, which is exactly why converting a mark is confusing: the same 82% is an A under NEB and a B+ under Kathmandu University. Frequently asked questions
How is NEB GPA calculated?
Each subject's percentage maps to a letter grade with a fixed grade point on a 4.0 scale: A+ is 4.0 for 90 and above, A is 3.6 for 80 to 89, B+ is 3.2 for 70 to 79, B is 2.8 for 60 to 69, C+ is 2.4 for 50 to 59, C is 2.0 for 40 to 49 and D is 1.6 for 35 to 39. Your GPA is the average of those points, weighted by credit hours where your marksheet gives them.
What is the pass mark in the NEB grading system?
You need at least a D, which is 35 percent, in every individual subject. There is no overall aggregate minimum, so a strong GPA does not rescue one failed subject. Below 35 gives NG, meaning Not Graded, and that subject has to be cleared in the supplementary examination.
How do I convert my GPA to a percentage?
There is no official NEB conversion formula. The convention many consultants use is to multiply the GPA by 25, so 3.2 becomes roughly 80 percent, and this calculator shows that approximation. Treat it as a rough guide only and do not put it on a formal application unless the institution specifically asks for it.
Is the IOE grading system the same as NEB?
No. IOE sits under Tribhuvan University, so its older annual programmes report percentage divisions — Distinction at 75 percent and above, First Division at 60, Second at 45 and Pass at 35 — while its semester programmes use a 4.0 GPA scale with different cut-offs again. Pick the matching option rather than assuming the NEB scale applies.
Why does the same percentage give different grades?
Because Nepal genuinely has no unified scale. Under NEB, 82 percent is an A worth 3.6 points; under the Kathmandu University scale it falls in the B+ band. Choosing the wrong system on a scholarship or admission form is a real and avoidable mistake, which is why the scheme selector comes first here.
Do I need to enter credit hours?
Only if you want the weighted GPA. Enter them and each subject counts in proportion to its credits, which is how NEB Class 12 and every university semester result is actually computed. Leave them blank and you get a plain average of the grade points, which is the right answer if your marksheet does not list credits.
